Taylor’s Universe- Kind of Red (Marvel of Beauty MOBCD022)

Multi-instrumentalist, Robin Taylor is back with another Taylor’s Universe CD. This was recorded in late 2011 and finished in Jan 2012. It features most of the usual characters that are featured on Robin’s other albums, including Louise Nipper ghost vocals and engineering, Klaus thane on drums, Jakob Mygind on saxophone, and Hugh Steinmetz on trumpet and flugelhorn and Robin plays everything else. The opening track , Firestone starts is an organ driven track to start and then the horns really lead the way. Jakriborg is a very relaxed number with a great flugelhorn solo and a lazy piano line that fits perfect. The guitar kicks in much later to boost the energy of the track. Crackpot Men starts off with a sax solo as the keyboards slowly enter and the drums and bass fade up into the sound. This one also has great dynamics and interplay. Sunday Image has some nice layers of keyboards that dominate the track to start as it drifts between this very nice and cozy and sort of mysterious theme. A very cool track. Salon Bleu is a happy track with a great sax solo but some cool spacey sounds permeating the background as well. Or are those the ghost voices or Louise and Jan? Cool dynamics in this number with the layers of organ, horn, etc.. A sort of push and pull.. Terasso is a very short 1 min happy organ lead track like you might hear at someone’s birthday! Tortugas starts with a piano and organ switch off and gets really strange and cool in the middle section. It then returns with a guitar riff that is complimented by the organ. This section reminds me of 70’s prog with all its interesting elements. This track was the highlight of the album for me. Lost in Jakriborg, ends the CD with a very happy mood and nice trumpet soloing by Hugh. Another very solid album with some interesting elements
